As with its key rivals the Peugeot 307CC and Renault Megane CC, the Astra TwinTop uses a folding metal roof to make it more secure than a traditional fabric-roofed convertible.
With seating for four adults, the Astra transforms from hard top to open roof car at the touch of a button. It will feature a choice of four engines at launch – three petrols in 1.6 103bhp, 1.8 138bhp and 2.0 196bhp turbo guises, and a 148bhp 1.9 CDTi diesel.
The car’s user-chooser potential has already been spotted by CAP’s national research manager Martin Ward. He said: ‘The Astra TwinTop has enormous potential because it can serve as a regular business car during the week and a fun car at weekends.
‘It will appear on far more fleet choice lists than the traditional soft top and is a genuine four seater.’
Prices and specifications will be announced nearer to its launch in the spring of 2006.
