VOLVO is developing a new safety product designed to help prevent drink-driving.

The Swedish carmaker is working on a breathalyser device integrated into the seatbelt that must be used before the car will start.

The unit shows a green light if the driver is OK to drive and, once the belt is fastened, the car can be started as normal. If the driver is over the limit, the device lights up red and the ignition will be disabled.

Another work in progress is an ignition key that can be programmed to limit the car’s speed. There are no current plans to put either device into production, but Volvo says it will continue to develop them and monitor public and industry reaction before making any decisions.
