BMW is to supply 4000 low-carbon vehicles to the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games after it was named the games' automotive partner this morning.

The Efficient Dynamic cars, which must not only meet the Euro 6 emissions standard but also beat the maximum average of 120g/km CO2, will be used to transport athletes, officials and the media during the games.

“Sustainability is a central pillar of our business and guides all aspects of our operations," said Ian Robertson, BMW management board member responsible for sales and marketing.

"Therefore we have a natural affinity with London 2012 and its commitment to low carbon and healthy living.”

BMW hopes the move will focus attention on its range of fuel-efficient cars.

The manufacturer will also showcase electric vehicles as part of the agreement.

In addition,  BMW bicycles will be available for use by athletes and by London 2012 staff.

BMW motorcycles will also be used.
