As used buyers increasingly seek better specced vans, models without turbodiesel engines, smart paintwork and air-con are increasingly struggling, according to experts at Glass’s Guide.

George Alexander, editor of Glass’s Guide to Commercial Vehicle Values, said: “The current marketplace sees more stylish small vans being in vogue, although it remains temperamental with any sharp rise in volume quickly upsetting the applecart.

“Vendors will be increasingly disappointed with the returns from any older-style vans, unless presented in A1 condition. Likewise, early technology, basic specification and non-turbo diesels do not work for buyers who have come to expect more.”

Although still popular, Citroën Berlingo and Peugeot Partner vans are starting to show their age. These veterans are currently available in ready numbers and only achieve ‘Guide Trade’ value when presented in top condition with a side-loading door. More positively, with restricted volume on their side, clean and tidy Renault Kangoos and Vauxhall Combos perform well against the guide.

In the medium panel van sector, all clean and tidy vans are sought after. However, it continues to be the late-year, higher horsepower, lower-mileage examples that create the biggest stir.

In the large panel van sector, despite having lost a little of its shine, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter retains the top slot.
When presented in clean condition, late-plate Renault Masters, Iveco Dailys, Peugeot Boxers and Fiat Ducatos will achieve Guide Trade, yet with so many poor examples, this seriously undermines their auction performance.
