Saab is joining the crossover lifestyle market with a new version of the 9-3, due to go on sale in the UK later this year.

The 9-3X follows the template laid down by Audi’s Allroad – it is based on the standard 9-3 SportWagon estate body but features a jacked-up ride height, four-wheel drive (on the petrol model) and body cladding to make it stand out on the road.

The chassis has been raised by up to 35mm to give greater ground clearance, although this car is not being marketed as a mud-plugger like a traditional SUV.

Simon Padian, Saab brand design chief, said: “The 9-3X is an efficient all-rounder for anyone who doesn’t want or need an SUV-type vehicle.

"We are offering a car that will do what is required in more comfort and style than a heavier SUV.”

Visually, the 9-3X differs from standard models by featuring new front and rear bumpers finished in dark grey, and this design theme is echoed on the side sills and wheelarch blisters.

Bespoke 17-inch alloy wheels and matt aluminium detailing complete the look.

Two engines will be offered – a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit delivering 210bhp allied to a four-wheel drive system, or a front-wheel drive 1.9 TTiD twin-turbo diesel engine offering 180bhp and CO2 emissions of 144g/km.

Expect 9-3X models to command around a £1,500 premium over the standard SportWagon models.
