Volkswagen has released details of two new models – a super-frugal Golf and a high-performance diesel version of the Scirocco.

On sale next month, the Golf BlueMotion is powered by a 105bhp 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine.

It returns 68.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 105g/km, putting it in the lowest 13% diesel benefit-in-kind tax band.

Available initially in SE trim, prices start at £17,165 for a three-door model (a £410 premium over the standard 1.6 TDI SE).

Towards the end of the year, an S trim level model will be launched, lowering CO2 emissions down to 99g/km thanks to less weight and equipment, plus the fitment of a stop-start system.

Available to order now, the Scirocco 2.0 TDI 170 delivers claimed combined fuel economy of 53.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g/km.

The new engine is available only in GT trim, which brings six-CD autochanger, automatic headlights and wipers, air conditioning and alloy wheels.

Prices start at £21,755.

Elselwhere, Saab’s new 9-3X model will be priced from £24,995 for the front-wheel drive 1.9 TTiD diesel version and rise to £27,506 for the four-wheel drive turbocharged petrol model.

Chevrolet is offering free air conditioning on any Cruze 1.6 S model purchased before August 31.

Air con is usually a £450 option on the £11,995 saloon.
