MOT failure rates for cars and small vans have been published for the first time following a Freedom of Information (FoI) request by the BBC.

The data relates to MOT tests carried out in 2007 and is available on the VOSA website as a PDF document consisting of 1,200 pages. The list was limited to the most popular models - those that have had at least 20,000 tests.

1. Renault Megane (28.1% failure rate)
2. Vauxhall Corsa ( 24.7% failure rate)
3. Ford Mondeo (21.8% failure rate)
4. Renault Cleo (21.2% failure rate)
5. Ford Ka (21% failure rate)
6. Peugeot 206 (20.5% failure rate)
7. MINI Mini (20% failure rate)
8. Volkswagen Golf (19.2% failure rate)
9. Vauxhall Zafira (18.9% failure rate)
10. Vauxhall Astra (18.4% failure rate)
