BMW is refining both ends of its range with specification enhancements to the flagship 840 and new engines for the 3-series.

The new 840 Ci Sport takes some of the specification from the deleted 850 CSi but is available for the same £57,455 on-the-road asking price as the 840 Ci. Front spoiler, 'M' style door mirrors and 'M' suspension - which lowers the Sport by 15mm - are all fitted as standard, along with unique 'M' system tyres. Otherwise, the 840 Ci Sport is mechanically identical to the Ci, with 286bhp and 310lb ft of torque on tap from the 4.4-litre eight cylinder engine.

On the 3-series, the 2.5 six-cylinder power unit becomes standard on the 323i Touring and Convertible. The 170bhp engine reduces 0-62mph times by two seconds on both models and top speed rises by 7mph to 139mph for the Touring and from 131mph to 135mph for the Convertible without reducing the 31mpg average fuel consumption. New alloy wheels, heated wide angle exterior mirrors and ASC+T stability control also become part of the standard package, which increases the price by £360 to £23,965 for the Touring and £27,165 for the Convertible including delivery and road tax.
