SEAT has installed the torquey 100bhp Volkswagen 1.6 engine in the Toledo to replace both the 1.6 and 1.8 versions previously fitted.

The new unit provides more power than both its predecessors without sacrificing much in the way of fuel consumption. Top speed is 116mph and 0-60mph takes just 11.3secs but the Toledo SE returns up to 46.3mpg on the extra urban cycle. The SE also comes with dual airbags, electric sunroof and air-conditioning included as standard in the £12,800 on-the-road price.

The Spanish manufacturer is also reinforcing its reputation for performance with the introduction of a new 150bhp 2.0 car - the most powerful production Ibiza ever. The 134mph 16-valve Cupra costs £14,595 on-the-road - including 16-inch alloy wheels, ABS, traction control, trip computer but no air conditioning or sunroof.
