SHORT Message System technology could provide a solution to the safety dilemma posed by in-car mobile phone use, according to Car Fleet Control. The company has incorporated SMS - which enables text messages to be sent to drivers through pagers or digital mobile phones - in its latest fleet management software product Fleetbase 3.0, which was launched last month.

Information is sent directly from the software and can be retrieved at any time, ensuring drivers are not disturbed or forced to make notes of verbal information while on the road.

Managing director Greg Connell said: 'SMS is not by any means a total solution but where, for example, a piece of information needs to be sent to a driver, they can access it at a safe and convenient moment by parking at the side of the road and turning on their mobile phone.'
