SUBARU launched its answer to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV at this week's Frankfurt Motor Show. Like the forthcoming Land Rover Freelander, the new Forester joins a growing sector of compact 4x4s combining off-road ability with better on-road manners and a more affordable price tag.

Based on the Impreza floorpan, the Forester is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which returns class-leading average fuel economy of 30.7mpg in manual form. The Forester also offers best-in-class luggage space at 53.9 cu ft with the seats folded down and has 20 additional storage spaces located around the cabin and boot spaces.

The Subaru's £16,400 asking price buys full-time four-wheel drive, a low ratio dual-range gearbox, ABS, dual airbags and car-like handling and looks. Imports start later this month.
