ALFA Romeo's new flagship - the 166 - goes on sale in the UK in January next year when it will take on the likes of the BMW 5-series, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-class and Lexus GS300. The new car will be powered by a choice of three engines - the 2.0-litre Twin Spark 16v 155bhp, 2.5-litre V6 190bhp and 3.0-litre V6 226 bhp.

The latter is mated to a six-speed gearbox. A 134 bhp 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine model which will be available on mainland Europe, will not be available at launch. However, the importer is assessing the UK market and next year the engine could debut in the Alfa Romeo 156 before appearing in the new 166.

The 166, which replaces the 164, promises the prestige, comfort and performance of a luxury saloon. Specification will include ABS, anti-slip regulation and traction control and twin airbags.
