FLEETS are being targeted as a key market for a new tyre pressure monitoring system originally developed to enhance safety in motor racing. The SmarTire Pressure Monitoring System uses sensors located inside each tyre to warn drivers when pressures are dropping and before damage can be caused to the tyre rim or before the driver loses control. The maker says the safety aspect could prove a potential life-saver and fleets would also benefit from cost savings achieved through taking action early when the tyre starts to become flat.

A spokesman for SmarTire Europe, which was launched in Europe last year, said: 'Over the last decade, more and more sensor technology has become standard equipment on cars, from wash bottle levels handbrake application and light-bulb failure. Tyre pressure has been more difficult to sense remotely because of the difficult environment inside a moving tyre.' Prices are £199.95 for a two-tyre package and £249.95 for a four-tyre package with fitting carried out at Hi-Q service centres. Call Nigel Hammond on 01635 878686 for details.
