VAUXHALL is joining prestige brands such as Saab and Volvo in fitting new technology to its seats to prevent whiplash injuries. The Vauxhall Active Head Restraints, almost identical to those fitted to Saab models, will be fitted as standard in Omega and Vectra models and be available as an option on Astra and Zafira. Vauxhall says the technology makes it the first volume manufacturer to attempt to cut the number of neck and spinal injuries by offering whiplash protection.

The device is activated as the driver's body weight returns to the seat back in the event of a rear-end collision. To shorten the distance between the head and the restraint, it moves upwards and forwards to reduce the force on the neck. The restraint, which is housed in the seat back, will not interfere with the side airbag or affect driver comfort. It becomes standard on all Omegas and Vectras from September and will be an option on Zafira and Astra from early next year.
