BRITAIN'S biggest fleet, BT, is proving the worth of teleworking by reducing its fleet's annual mileage by 150 million miles.

The company, which was named UK Fleet of the Year at this year's Fleet News Awards, says the move has the potential to benefit the economy to the tune of more than £2 billion. The news coincides with a drive to promote teleworking which, in turn, would cut congestion on Britain's roads by 10 per cent.

The RAC Foundation has joined forces with the Telework Association to call for more encouragement for working from home. The call follows a Motors and Modems Revisited Report from the RAC Foundation which suggests teleworking could cut commuter traffic by 10 per cent within five years, while video conferencing would slash business travel by 3%. Widespread use of the internet and home working could cut congestion by 45%.

Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation, said: 'If each employee could work from home just one day per week we would see a 25% cut in traffic.'
