AUDI has hit the 150,000 mark for aluminium-bodied cars with 93,000 A8s and 57,000 A2s. Launched in 1994, the A8 was the world's first aluminium production car, constructed using the lightweight Audi Space Frame (ASF), and the result of 16 years of research.

Using the ASF and aluminium body panels, the A2 is 40% lighter than it would be using steel. The cars are built at Audi's Neckarsulm plant in Germany where 100 staff are now employed specifically to advance the art of building with aluminium.
