The car initially comes with a choice of five engines - two petrol and three diesel.
Prices for the models launched next month start at £8,820 on-the-road for the three-door, 55bhp 1.2-litre model to £13,995 for the Sport TDI PD 100 five-door manual. A cheaper 1.2-litre model, priced at £7,995, will be launched later in the year.
Volkswagen's head of fleet Vince Kinner said the manufacturer hoped to sell 44,000 units this year. At least 10,000 of those sales could be to fleets, he added.
'We will be targeting small fleets such as agencies and estate agents,' Kinner said, 'and for the first time in two years we are also contacting public sector companies.' VW anticipates that 14% of Polo sales this year will be for diesel models, up from 10% for the last generation Polo.
