The RAC Foundation says the figure of 20,000 total is an estimate if they increase at current rates. It suggests cameras would be better targeted at accident blackspots and junctions.
Britain currently has 5,000 cameras which are expected to result in three million drivers being fined £60 next year.
Last month, one road safety organisation urged fleets to support the use of speed cameras as a key road safety tool when a survey revealed most motorists would turn a blind eye if they saw one being destroyed by vandals.
Brake says the cameras are vital to reduce speeding and to cut accidents. Its comments came as an RAC Foundation/Autocar report showed that nearly three-quarters of motorists polled would turn a blind eye to speed camera vandalism (Fleet NewsNet October 28).
