SUBARU is promising significant improvements in running costs and benefit-in-kind tax liability with its new Legacy range (pictured) when it goes on sale in November.

With a choice of petrol-only four-wheel drive saloons and estates, the car will make its European debut next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Both the 2.0 and 2.5-litre four-cylinder 'boxer' engines have increased power (136bhp and 163bhp respectively) while fuel consumption is comparable to equivalent two-wheel drive cars. Economy figures on automatic models match or better the manual versions.

Fuel consumption for the 2.0-litre ranges from 36.7mpg to 37.7mpg on the combined cycle, depending on body style and transmission, while the 2.5-litre ranges from 34mpg to 34.9mpg. Outback models range from 28.8mpg for the 3.0R auto to 33.2mpg for the 2.5-litre.

As well as the 3.0-litre six-cylinder Outback estate, there will also be a saloon with the same engine. Power output for the six-cylinder engine is 242bhp, with fuel consumption of 28.8mpg on the combined cycle. Prices will be announced closer to the car's UK launch.
