Looking back to last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Ford and Vauxhall took all top 10 places in terms of used car sales.

First place was achieved by the Ford Escort Mk4, with 280,907 transactions, followed by Fiesta Mk3 and Mondeo. In tenth place was the Vauxhall Astra Mk4, with 132,202 sales.

In our industry, which revolves around little that is older than three years, it is easy to forget the huge number of older cars that are still going strong.

In fact, there are around 9.5 million cars on our roads that are more than nine years old – which puts ex-fleet, leasing and contract hire vehicles into perspective in terms of supply.

It is an interesting thought that Escorts were once bright, shiny new cars, launched with all the glitz and glamour for which this industry is famed.

The role such cars play in the ongoing shape of the market now has to be projected forward from that point and this is where the CAP's New Car Birth Certificate steps in.

By enabling us to gather and understand all the complexities of the statistics relating to the future of a vehicle, it now plays an important role in shaping our view of a model's future used car performance.

Building a profile of each new model, with expected sales, model/engine mixes and even the expected take up of options means we, and the industry, can benefit from a balanced view of the market.
