Fleet NewsNet’s sister site CompanyCarDriver discovered that 67% of users who took part in an online poll agreed with the ban. However, it wasn’t a completely clear-cut decision. Comments on the website’s forum showed that people could see no practical way of enforcing it.
One CCD user said: ‘I can’t see how the police will determine whether the person smoking behind the wheel is in a shared company car. Will they pull over every smoker?’
Another suggested: ‘It would be impossible for the police to prosecute. Magistrates are already under pressure and not-guilty pleas would put unimaginable strain on the system.
‘Even if found guilty, the likely fine would be £50. The cost to bring a case like this would be between £35 and £45 so there would be no point.’
