MORE than a third (37%) of UK employees commutes more than 20 miles a day – and studies have shown workers are commuting further as they age.

Research into distances travelled for employment have shown 18 to 24-year-olds travel the least distance, averaging 13.4 miles a da, compared to the 45 to 55-year-old age group who commute the most, averaging 24.3 miles a day.

Stewart Scott, director of Hyder Consulting which completed the research, said: ‘We are perhaps less willing to move and more willing to commute for our jobs.

‘The study also suggests that those employers embracing flexible working practices will gain a key advantage in recruiting staff, particularly older and more experienced workers.’

Of those who commute more than 20 miles a day, 51% said they do so because they have a good job or like their company, 43% do it for the salary and 43% said they commute because friends and family live near their home.
