The votes have been counted in Britain’s biggest vehicle reliability survey, which involved 906,000 vehicles.

Honda was named the most reliable manufacturer by the 50 biggest leasing companies in Britain, who between them have more than 1.46 million cars on their books.

Honda came away with a brace of awards after the survey, which was carried out by Fleet News, also revealed that its Accord was found to be the most reliable model from 708,000 fleet cars.

This is the third year in a row that Honda has retained the two most valued podium places in the FN50 reliability survey, which involves hundreds of thousands more vehicles than consumer surveys such as Top Gear and Which?.

Only multi-marque leasing companies were eligible to participate in the survey and were questioned on their most reliable cars according to the number of breakdowns per 100 of each type of model.

The Japanese and German manufacturers dominated the top five most reliable carmakers, with Toyota taking second place and BMW, Volkswagen and Audi taking third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The story is the same with the most reliable cars, with Toyota’s Avensis coming in second place followed by Vokswagen’s Jetta, Honda’s Civic and MINI.

In a separate survey involving more than 116,000 light commercial vehicles, Ford came out as the most reliable LCV manufacturer. It was followed on the top five podium by Vauxhall, which came in second, Volkswagen third, Mercedes-Benz fourth and Citroën in fifth place.

The Ford Transit Connect was named the most reliable van, giving the Blue Oval a double podium position. Ford also took silver after the larger Transit was named the second most reliable LCV on the market. Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz followed with their Transporter, Vito and Sprinter vans.
