Trails of all-electric cars have begun as part of a larger initiative to help fleets reduce their carbon footprint.

Amey is piloting Mercedes-Benz electric Smart cars in Oxford, Birmingham and Plymouth.

The company is also introducing a range of sustainable fleet management practices, including

  • speed limiters and driver training;
  • promoting the use of video conferencing and car share schemes; and,
  • utilising electric and hybrid vehicles.

“It is time for councils and businesses to prepare themselves now for a more sustainable future,” said Mel Ewell, chief executive officer of Amey.

“We are always looking for new and innovative ways to minimise our own carbon footprint and we can help our customers to do the same.

“We will be monitoring the performance of these vehicles closely with the aim to roll out a larger fleet of low-carbon vehicles.”
