All new vehicles from BMW are to feature advanced-design seats claiming of offer fresh levels of comfort because they are more compatible with the human body.

“We have taken the human anatomy as our benchmark so the seats will be a better fit for people of all shapes and sizes,” promises company physiotherapist Dr Matthias Franz.

After six years of research, his seat development unit showed three concept frames for greater in-car comfort when the doors opened on BMW’s research centre in Munich.

“Many of our customers are company drivers who spend a lot of time on the road. In effect, they work from their cars and have told us they rate maximum comfort as a high priority.

“But we are also aiming for our new seat range to add to the pleasure of driving,” said Dr Franz.

To be adopted across every group model range from Mini to Rolls-Royce, the new seats will be based on a Fin Ray fish-like structure and use composite plastic and elastic laminate sections to help exercise the spine.
