Mitsubishi Fuso has launched a new Canter truck which offers better fuel consumption and payloads than the old model.

The Canter, which is Euro 5 compliant, is offered in gross vehicle weights of 3.5-7.5 tonnes. At the lower level, a 3.0-litre diesel powerplant offers 130bhp @ 3,500rpm and 221lb-ft of torque @ 1,300-3,000rpm.

In tests conducted under real-life conditions, engineers found that fuel consumption was down by 5-8% compared to previous models – depending on the model variant and driving conditions. Official mpg and CO2 figures are not yet available.

Four versions are on offer – single and double-cabs with narrow and wide options. C-Series (Comfort) has an outer width of 1,995 mm, while the S-Series (Standard) is a more slimline version at 1,695 mm wide. Payload on the 3.5-tonner is 1,520-1,565kg.

An engine brake comes as standard on all variants. There is now more brake power and it responds faster.

The engine brake extends the service life of the brake pads, thereby saving money. At the same time, the zero-wear additional brake boosts safety.

One new detail of the system is that all 3.5-tonne models feature weight-optimised brakes at the front.

The cab-over-engine design means all components are accessible for servicing or repair work and the turning circle is between 10.6 and 17 metres, depending on the model chosen.

The truck’s ladder-type frame means it can be used with various attachment bodies.

Depending on the country, the Canter is available as a complete vehicle in numerous variants produced in conjunction with leading makers of attachment bodies.

Mitsubishi Fuso is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz and the trucks will be sold through the Mercedes dealer network.
