The legal drink-drive limit in Ireland is to be reduced to 50mg at the end of the year.

People who drive for work will face an even lower limit of just 20mg - a limit that will also apply to learner drivers.

For all other drivers, the current limit of 80mg alcohol per 100ml blood will be cut to 50mg.

This leaves Britain and Malta as the last two European countries with drink-drive limits of 80mg.

Once Ireland’s new drink-drive limit comes into effect in the New Year, all other European countries will have limits of 50mg or lower.

There are now calls from road safety groups here to reduced Britain's limit.

Road safety charity Brake said the UK Government should "follow the example of our Irish neighbours by lowering the drink-drive limit and stepping up enforcement of the law".
