BMW has taken the wraps off its all-new 5 Series model.

Due to go on sale in the UK next March, buyers will have the choice of three diesel and four petrol engines.

Diesels include the big selling 520d which now has 184bhp, returns 56.5mpg on the combined cycle and emits 132g/km of CO2, placing it in the 18% benefit-in-kind tax band. The figures are achieved through tweaks to the EfficientDynamics suite of technologies which now include stop-start, gearshift indicator and brake energy regeneration.

Other diesels are the six-cylinder 525d and 530d. Petrol unils include the 523i, 528i, 535i and 550i.

BMW is promising increased equipment levels, with all models coming with Bluetooth telephony and leather seats as standard.

Prices rise slightly - a 520d SE will cost £27,555 in March, compared with £27,430 for the current version which comes without Bluetooth and leather seats as standard.
