Limited production of the Maxus could start in Britain again after the assets of LDV, the West Midlands van manufacturer, were bought by a company owned by Dr Qu Li, who worked as a consultant for MG Rover.

Eco Concept Limited, a vehicle engineering company owned by Dr Li, announced it has bought the assets of the failed van maker, which was previously backed by Oleg Deripaska, the Russian oligarch.

Eco Concept plans to start a new business in the West Midlands producing and assembling low volume specialist light commercial vehicles. It is hoped vehicle trials will begin within 18 months.

It is understood that the new venture will be on a small scale, employing around 200 people, and that the existing LDV sites will not be used – although some LDV machinery may be moved elsewhere. Eco plans to set up a new site somewhere in the West Midlands.

Clive Griffiths, CEO of Eco Concept Limited, said: “We will utilise our overseas connections to help develop fuel-efficient powertrains as well as securing low-cost components.”

Dr Li added: “I am very pleased that negotiations with the administrators have reached such a successful conclusion.
“Furthermore, I can confirm that we have secured co-operation and ongoing support from a number of international automotive manufacturers and distributors.”
