Dundee City Council has taken fresh steps to reduce its carbon emissions with the introduction of two electric vehicles to its waste management fleet as part of the council’s carbon management plan.

The two Mega electric tippers are being used by the waste management department in Dundee town centre, Lochee and Broughty Ferry.

Convener of Dundee City Council’s environmental services committee Jimmy Black said: "Now that it is practical to use the existing technology, and it is within a reasonable budget, we have brought in these two small electric-powered trucks on a long-term evaluation.

"The plan is to re-charge them whenever possible with electricity generated at the Energy from Waste plant at Baldovie, which will rank them amongst the most sustainable vehicles on the road anywhere.

"If this trial proves to be successful, the scheme will be expanded across the whole of the litter collection and street sweeping services in the city."
