Volkswagen has released details of its first ever hybrid vehicle.

Due to go on sale next year, the Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid is powered by a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine offering 330bhp, while an electric motor provides an extra 50bhp.

Under 31mph, the car is powered solely by the electric motor, resulting in zero exhaust emissions, or it can be used to assist the petrol engine.

Volkswagen claims combined peak power of 369bhp, 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds, combined fuel economy of 31mpg and CO2 emissions of 210g/km.

To put those figures into context, a V6 diesel Touareg emits 244g/km of CO2 and returns 28.5mpg.
