Fiat has introduced its fuel-saving Start&Stop technology to the 500 city car, resulting in improved economy and lower emissions.

The system, which automatically turns off the engine when the car comes to a stop and the driver selects neutral, is available with 1.2-litre petrol-engined versions and is priced from £9,500.

Compared to a standard 1.2-litre model, the Start&Stop version improves average fuel economy from 55.4 to 58.9mpg, while CO2 emissions fall by 6g/km to 113.

The 500 is already fitted with another Fiat fuel-saving device – Eco:Drive, which allows data from the car to be downloaded on to a computer which enables analysis to be undertaken on driving style and then suggests improvements.

Adam Pumfrey, fleet and remarketing director at Fiat UK, said: “Together with Eco:Drive and Start&Stop, Fiat is demonstrating how vehicles and their drivers both have a part to play in reducing overall emissions and fuel consumption which, in turn, reduces fuel and tax costs – an essential consideration for any fleet manager.”
