Paragon Software Systems has launched new technology that uses traffic speed data captured from satellite tracking systems to predict travel times.

The routing and scheduling software uses data collected from over 200,000 vehicles travelling around the UK.

Paragon said the new speed data provides a truer reflection of real travel times.

Previously it was only possible to apply average speeds based on a road classification, such as urban motorway or rural B-road, along with regional adjustments.

Now Paragon’s map system can include pre-set speeds on individual road links that have been derived by analysing large numbers of road speed observations.

“This development is an important advancement in routing and scheduling optimisation,” explained William Salter, managing director of Paragon Software Systems.

“Calculations are more precise and travel time planning immediately becomes more accurate.”

The new technology is available through a £1,000 upgrade to existing paragon customers’ software. It then costs £500 a year.
