The Scottish Government will fund the launch of the SAFED for Vans driver development programme to van drivers and fleet operators in the country.

The scheme is linked to the heavy goods training initiative launched by SAFED in 2005. @@banner@
SAFED for Vans in Scotland will be fully funded by the Scottish Government for the first 50 instructors and first 100 drivers and awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Funded places are limited to five per business.

SAFED is voluntary and focused on reducing carbon emissions and saving money. It teaches drivers to improve fuel efficiency by using gears better, avoiding over-revving the engine and maintaining a better distance from vehicles in front by not dabbing at the brakes, as well as better road awareness.

SAFED for Vans has trained 10,000 van drivers and 318 trainers in England since 2006. It claims a 9,000-tonne annual cut in carbon emissions, on-the-day mpg rises of nearly 16% and potential annual fuel savings of £3.3 million, an average of £425 per van driver.

SAFED for Vans in England won the Editor’s Award at last year’s Fleet Van awards.
