At first glance, Commercial Group’s fleet operation is typical of most medium-sized businesses across the country.

There are 45 user-chooser company cars, with the sales and management team driving mainly executive models from Audi and BMW. Technicians have mainstream brands such as Mazdas and Skodas.

There are 12 outright purchase vans – all Ford Transits – that are used for deliveries.

Look closer and it becomes obvious that this fleet is far from run of mill.

Emissions reduction

Tell-tale signs such as a zero-emission, sign-written electric Smart car, plugged in and recharging, and a large, above-ground on-site biofuel storage tank, show that the company is doing more than just talking the green talk.

Commercial Group, a Cheltenham-based independent office services and procurement business, takes reducing its environmental impact seriously.

It is a registered Carbon Neutral Organisation with a self-imposed target to reduce its carbon emissions by 75% in three years.

That target was set two years ago and Commercial Group is likely to not only meet it but probably beat it when the final tally comes in next year.

The company has already reduced emissions by 60%. Key to this impressive carbon reduction achievement has been the company’s vehicle fleet and its fleet manager.

Rob Paddock was named Fleet News Fleet Manager of the Year: up to 100 vehicles, for his work managing down his fleet’s emissions – which account for 85% of the company’s total carbon production.
