Twenty British companies, associations and non-Government organisations have signed the EU Road Safety Charter, commiting them to help
save lives on the UK’s roads.

At the signing was Paul Clark , the road safety minister.

In 2008, deaths on the UK’s roads fell by 14% to 2,538, marking the largest percentage in a single
year since the 1940s, while serious injuries fell by 6%.

“These latest statistics show we are continuing to make excellent progress towards our stated longterm goal of making Britain’s roads the safest in the world," said Clark.

"They also mean that we have achieved our 2010 target on reducing deaths and serious injuries two years early.”

The 20 organisations and companies who signed included 3M, Arval, Bethell Group, British Gas,
British Red Cross, British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), Drive Alive and Wolseley.
