Fleet operators are set to play a key role in a campaign being mounted to promote the switch to zero-emission transport.

Talks between Renault and ‘significant’ corporate vehicle users including postal services and telecom firms are at an advanced stage over the introduction of a battery-powered version of the Kangoo light van in 2011.

Executives at the French firm are also confident of clinching a deal with organisers of the 2012 London Olympics that would provide a global publicity platform for the environmentally-friendly delivery vehicle.

“Our intention is for electric vehicles to play a prominent part at this major event and we expect a decision to be announced in a matter of weeks, company business development manager Christine Tissot told Fleet News.

Speaking as the company unveiled a demonstration prototype of the Kangoo EV - its first production battery vehicle - she revealed trials of pilot models would begin from early next year with selected fleets across Europe to prove powertrain durability.

“The corporate fleets represent a strong business focus for us and the level of congestion charging and expensive parking rates makes London stand out as a special case. We believe our electric package offers the right solution and will prove it with the Kangoo,” she said.

By 2012, the van will be joined by an electric-driven Megane saloon and a two-seat urban car as part of plans aimed at making Renault a leading contender in zero-emission commuter travel.
