Fleet manager Liz Hollands got more than she bargained for when she recently called Chris Evans’ Drivetime show on BBC Radio 2.

Hollands was listening to a slot called ‘Woman’s Minute’, where Evans speaks to three or four women about their day and the car they are driving.

Each week, the Radio 2 team also pose a different question and this particular week it was: “If money were no object, what would be your one indulgence?”

“By Thursday I was fed up with hearing “I’d have my hair done every day” or “I’d have my nails done every day”, so I called up and said I’d have a P51D Mustang,” explained Hollands.

After initially thinking she was referring to a car, Hollands explained to Evans and co that the P51D Mustang was in fact a World War II fighter plane capable of more than 400mph.

Neglecting to mention she actually held a pilot’s licence herself, the DTZ fleet manager ended the call and thought that was that.

However, one week later Hollands received a call from the show’s producer saying they were so intrigued by her answer that they were going to run a feature on the plane.

They had contacted The Fighter Collection at Duxford and asked her if Evans wanted to talk to her again, would she be available?

He duly called and live on air offered her a flight in the only two-seater dual control Mustang currently in the UK, flying from Duxford, which she readily accepted.

Hollands took to the air with Ed Shipley, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s best air display pilots.

She said: “I took the controls for some of the flight and did a couple of aileron rolls and some general diving and swooping. It was all absolutely awesome and now work seems very mundane.”
