Fleet operators can choose to track vehicles though drivers’ mobile phones rather than install vehicle tracking software with a new downloadable application.

The application designed for popular GPS-enabled smartphones such as Blackberry, Nokia, HTC, Sony Ericsson and Samsung is claimed to provide data available through fleet tracking systems at a lower cost.

The application, available from Crystal Ball, claims a UK first allowing customers to have mobile handsets, fleet vehicles and assets tracked, as well as protecting lone workers.

Unlike conventional vehicle-based ‘black-box’ tracking systems, as well as giving extensive live data, the system can also keep on monitoring workers after they have left a vehicle.

The system feeds back live information, recording speed, journey time, distance and precise location, as well as incoming and outgoing mobile phone call and text information through a web-based system.

It also features a reports suite with information is held for three months, while employers can monitor information in real time via their computer or access it anywhere using the internet.

Crystal Ball managing director Raj Singh believes its versatility will revolutionise the grey fleet vehicle sector as employers will no longer have to repeatedly install and de-install conventional tracking boxes in vehicles that don’t belong to them.

Crystal Ball has now announced agreement with 400 dealers nationwide to sell the system and anticipates that this will grow by 50 per cent in the next two months.

Singh said: “There is also no need for fleet managers to invest in the additional cost of installing conventional vehicle tracking when they are able to simply use the GPS technology embedded within their mobile phone.”
