New priority will be give to educating drivers that a single number - 112 - will put them through to the emergency services in whatever EU country they are in.

The new European Union digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes said promoting the EU-wide 112 emergency number is her first priority in the job.

Kroes wants national governments to "intensify their efforts" to raise awareness of the number, noting 75% of EU drivers do not know ‘112’ reaches emergency services in all member states.
