Several fleets are involved in the first customer trials of the Vauxhall Vivaro Hydrogen van ahead of the UK launch of its largest light commercial vehicle (LCV), the Movano Hydrogen.

The Vivaro Hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (EV) is already sold in left-hand drive (LHD) markets by Vauxhall’s sister brand, Opel.

Based on the existing fully electric Vivaro Electric, the Vivaro Hydrogen features a 45kW fuel cell and 10.5kWh lithium-ion battery located under the front seats for a driving range of 249 miles (WLTP).

The 5kg hydrogen fuel tanks located under the floor can be re-filled in five minutes - about the same time needed to fill up a conventional diesel or petrol vehicle.

The 10.5kWh lithium-ion battery provides dynamic peak power when required, such as at start-up and under acceleration.

It also ensures the fuel cell can run at optimum operating conditions and allows for regenerative braking.

The plug-in capability enables the battery to be re-charged externally if necessary, providing 31 miles of pure battery electric range.

The hydrogen powertrain does not compromise space compared to combustion engine versions, offering up to 6.1 m3 of cargo volume and a maximum payload of 1,000kg.

The UK trial comes ahead of the launch of Movano Hydrogen, with orders set to open later this year and first deliveries expected in 2025.

The vehicle will offer a range of up to 311 miles (WLTP) and can be refuelled in under five minutes. The electric motor produces 110kW (150hp) and maximum torque of 410 Newton meters, while an 11kWh lithium-ion battery provides support when starting or accelerating.

The system also enables braking energy to be recuperated and fed into the battery as electricity via the electric motor working as a generator.

James Taylor, managing director of Vauxhall, said: “As the UK’s best-selling electric van manufacturer for the past three years, we are already leading the way in electrifying Britain’s businesses.

“With a 311-mile range, zero-emissions-in-use and quick refuelling, the Movano Hydrogen will provide fleets with another sustainable option alongside our full line-up of battery electric vans.

“I look forward to hearing feedback from fleet operators taking part in the trial ahead of the commercial launch of Movano Hydrogen later this year.”

The Movano Hydrogen will complement Vauxhall’s existing line-up of battery electric vans - the Combo Electric, Vivaro Electric and Movano Electric.

No pricing information has been published for either the Vivaro Hydrogen or the Movano Hydrogen.

Earlier this year, Vauxhall partnered with UK company Ryze Hydrogen to develop hydrogen charging infrastructure for fleet operators, allowing businesses to run hydrogen vehicles and refuel them either on-site or at a located refuelling facility.
