Geely Auto Group has introduced the Geely EX5 as the debut model for its new brand in the UK.
Despite previously ruling out launching to global markets under its own brand, Geely will now be offered as a standalone marque under the Geely Auto umbrella, joining LEVC, Lotus, Polestar and Volvo.
The EX5 is an electric mid-size SUV based on Geely's new GEA platform (Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture). The global model is available with a choice of 49.5kWh and 60.2kWh battery packs, with the latter providing a range of up to 264 miles (WLTP). A 218PS motor powers the front wheels, giving a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds.
Geely is yet to confirm the specifications of UK-bound models, however.
Fleet customers are a key market for Geely and the EX5 was showcased at Company Car in Action, last month, albeit on the LEVC stand. LEVC is also expected to launch a range of people carriers on its new SOA platform (Space Oriented Architecture), including an eight-seat L380, which it revealed to journalists two years ago at its main production facility near Coventry. However, that has since gone quiet.
A programme of customer clinics has been held to understand the UK market and to tailor both the car and the strategy for Geely in the UK.
As such, Lotus was called in to finalise the tuning of the EX5's chassis.
Mike Yang, general manager at Geely Auto UK, said: “We know the Geely EX5 is a great product with several core features that will appeal to a British audience. That’s why we chose it to be our first passenger car for sale in the UK. However, we’re aware that UK customers have unique demands.
“For that reason, before we release the car for sale, we’re working with the experts at Lotus Engineering to make sure we have a car that’s in line with expectations. Lotus Engineering has a formidable track record along with some of the best R&D resources, so we’re delighted to be working closely with them.”
A new distributor, Geely Auto UK, will effectively integrate local dealers, suppliers and strategic partners to support the local market.
The Geely EX5 is set to go on sale in late summer, with first deliveres due in Q4. An expanded line-up of Geely models will launch in 2026.
