While petrol pump prices have jumped 4.25% since July, electric vehicle (EV) charging costs have remained relatively static, according to new analysis published by the AA.
EV drivers charging at the kerbside outside their homes have seen a 3p/kWh fall in average peak charging costs, although off-peak charging has gone up 5p.
However, in other peak/off-peak and flat rate charging bands, costs have not just remained static but fallen by 1p/kWh in some – particularly for the fastest recharging speed.
Meanwhile, the average price of petrol jumped 6.19 pence per litre (ppl) in August, from the end of July, and is continuing to rise into September.
The reason for the hike in fossil fuels follows an OPEC-inspired $15 increase in the cost of oil in the same period, from $75 to above $90 a barrel.
Last month, the pence per mile cost for a typical small petrol car was 13.85p. This month it has risen to 14.44p.
That is now more expensive than for peak and off-peak charging at ultra-rapid facilities, says the AA.

Now that's interesting reading considering that Connected Kerb have just increased our local 7KW chargers from 34p to 50p/kWh. The email they sent out to users included a comparison table showing where they stand compared to other fast charger suppliers despite a 7KW charger not being a fast charger. Unfortunately this is a company that supply a lot of local authority areas for people that don't have access to off road parking and are in a position of having no choice should they choose to go electric. Hopefully this attitude will not become systemic throughout the various networks as it will have a significant impact on the uptake of EV's at a time when they need to be given every advantage they can.
