Volvo has confirmed a major update to its infotainment system software is being rolled out via an over-the-air update.

The free update will be available for all cars using the brand's Android-based infotainment system with Google built-in services.

It is based on the system developed for Volvo's electric EX30 and EX90 models. The new XC90 is the first vehicle to feature the new software.

“Our new-generation user experience will deliver a significant improvement in customer experience and is an important step in our journey to delivery human-centric technology solutions to our customers,” says Erik Severinson, chief product and strategy officer at Volvo Cars. “We’ll continuously and seamlessly adapt the user experience to match the needs of our customers through new and enhanced features that are delivered through over-the-air updates, to improve your car – and your experience – over time.”

Key among the changes is a redesigned user interface. A new home screen will display the most common apps and controls, such as maps, media and phone.

Volvo claims it takes fewer taps on the screen to get to the features most often used. For example, access to the media controls will be available while following directions on the map.

The contextual bar changes what is displayed according to the situation and shows the most recently used apps. When driving at low speeds, for example, the icon for outside cameras appears for quick access.

Plug-in hybrid drivers will be able to access ‘Drive Modes’ on the home screen, to easily access the ‘Pure’ mode alongside other options.

Volvo will begin the roll-out of its new software in 2025. It is estimated that 2.5 million cars will receive the upgrade.
