Review
If any proof was needed that manufacturers are not content to rest on their laurels when it comes to producing greener, more efficient cars, then the BMW 116d could be it.
For, although the manufacturer already boasts the World Green Car of the Year 2008 in the shape of the 118d, it has launched a new variant which trumps its previous champion.
Using a detuned version of the same 2.0-litre diesel engine, the 116d offers 64.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 118g/km – compared to the 118d’s 62.8mpg and 119g/km.
Its on-the-road price is also around £1,000 less.
This environmental performance means it qualifies for £35 annual VED and 13% benefit-in-kind tax – the lowest for diesels – which brings a monthly BIK bill of £41 for a 20% taxpayer.
Much of the car’s environmental success is down to the Efficient-Dynamics package which, with features such as auto start-stop and optimum gear shift indicator, takes much of the thought out of eco driving.
The gear shift indicator is particularly effective, as it has something of a hypnotic effect which makes it difficult not to obey its instructions.
EfficientDynamics also includes brake energy regeneration and electic power steering which helps ensure efficiency without compromising the BMW’s premium feel or driving experience.
Performance from the 116bhp engine is fine and the 116d rarely feels underpowered, while the refinement and quality lives up to the car’s status as the reigning Fleet News Best Small Premium Car award winner.
Our test model came in the 1 Series’s new Sport trim which offers 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, heated exterior mirrors and windscreen washer jets, a sports steering wheel and sports seats over the identically-priced ES trim – an extra £1,315 of equipment.
The larger wheels (ES trim has 16-inch alloys) look great, but detract from the ride quality, which is on the firm side.
From September, the detuned engine will also be available in the BMW 3 Series, where it will offer 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 118g/km.
Verdict
The 116d’s combination of high fuel economy, low CO2 emissions and performance means fleets looking for a sub-120g/km premium car are well catered for. However, the firm ride and cramped rear interior will not appeal to all.
