Audi has unveiled the new A6 Avant, which is set to go on sale in April.

The new A6 will be sold alongside the electric A6 e-tron and represents a shift in Audi's naming strategy.

Models with internal combustion engines (ICE), like the new A5, were meant to be given odd numbers while electric (EV) models took even ones. Now, both EV and ICE models can share the same model number.

The new A6 is based on Audi's PPC platform - so is technically unrelated to the A6 e-tron - and can be equipped with a petrol or diesel engine. Plug-in hybrids are likely to come later.

The new platform is said to make the A6 sportier to drive and also more refined.

Prices will start at £52,510 for the A6 Avant 2.0 TFSI Sport. It uses a mild hybrid petrol engine with 204PS and front-wheel drive.

The A6 Avant TDI gets Quattro all-wheel-drive as standard and matches the TFSI's 204PS output. Prices for the diesel start at £56,780.

CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are yet to be confirmed.

The A6 adopts Audi's new 'human centric' interior layout, which features up to three large screens. The digital instruments and central touchscreen are standard, while top-spec models get a third passenger display.

Passenger space has improved over the outgoing A6 Avant, as has the amount of sound deadening, and the new car offers a boot volume of 503 litres.

The A6 Avant will go on sale in April with first deliveries due in June.
