Review
After six months on our fleet it’s probably time for a thorough reassessment of the BMW X1.
During its early days it seemed an ideal vehicle for anyone who wanted a compact hatchback with more room than a 1 Series, and the comfort and improved safety of an elevated driving position.
Our rear-wheel drive version also has lower emissions compared with four-wheel drive models.
However, our harsh winter soon had us grounded as the rear-drive X1 struggled to make progress in the snow.
Not necessarily the X1’s fault, but it went some way to reminding us how foolish and misguided some of the anti-4x4 sentiment from some environmentalists has been over the last few years.
Maybe it was also a case of waiting for the car to loosen up, or the winter weather perhaps preventing the stop/start technology intervening when idling – running the heating system effectively would take priority over switching off to save fuel – but early fuel consumption on the low-40mpg region was a little disappointing.
However, after the thaw and with a few long trips under its belt the fuel consumption witnessed significant improvements, and by the end of the car’s stay with us, the on-board computer was showing a resolute 49.5mpg.
This is still a little below the official combined figure, but good work for a car with 177bhp.
The X1 showed evidence of BMW trying to attract different customers with its bright red seat fabric pattern appearing very unusual in a car wearing this badge.
The X1 turned out to be a decent compact family car with an extra dose of practicality that has become more appealing and led to the growth of so-called ‘cross-overs’.
Whereas cars like the Nissan Qashqai have carved out a successful niche, the X1 offers a more upmarket alternative that still keeps costs reined in.
