Chevrolet is aiming to attract fleets to the brand with its new value-focused Cruze model.
The lower-medium saloon challenger, which goes on sale in the UK next month, comes with low front-end pricing and strong equipment levels – positioning it to appeal to companies looking to cut costs and drivers wanting to reduce their tax liability.
Prices start at £11,995 for a 1.6-litre petrol S and rise to £15,195 for the 150bhp 2.0-litre diesel in top-specification LT trim. A 125bhp diesel varaint will become available a month after launch, priced from £13,495. Both are VM Motori units which are already used in the Capitva SUV.
As a result, Chevrolet has high hopes for the model in the fleet sector.
Mark Terry, Chevrolet UK managing director, said: “The Cruze is our first really credible fleet car and as a result gives us a great opportunity. It is a car that drivers and companies will find appealing because of its value.
“Chevrolet is about proven, reliable technology, which will give fleet managers the security they are looking for, while also helping them to reduce costs.”
Terry believes fleets will account for half of the 2,500 units projected to be sold in 2010, and this share could rise to 60%.
The Cruze debuts the new family face of Chevrolet, which will also appear on the forthcoming Spark small car due later this year.
This gives the car more road presence, while equally impressive is the fit and finish of the interior with solid, quality materials used and plenty of space for four.
Refinement is very good, with little in the way of engine noise or tyre roar while at motorway speeds, a comfortable seats and a compliant ride.
Equipment levels are strong, with all models coming with air conditioning and ESC stability control as standard.
The LT model featured adds cruise and climate control, rain-sensing wipers, CD changer with MP3 compatibility, steering wheel-mounted controls and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Chevrolet also expects the Cruze to attain the maximum five-star EuroNCAP crash test rating when the model is tested in August.
