RECORD 1996 sales figures from Toyota are expected to be boosted next year with the manufacturer gearing up to launch four new models in the UK. Following six new launches in 1996 next year's four-strong line-up of new models will include a new Corolla and the electric RAV4 with five of the models destined for use in Jersey.

This year Toyota expects to sell around 67,500 vehicles in the UK of which around a third will be to fleets - both record figures. In addition Toyota light commercial sales are also at record levels.

Focusing on Toyota's new American-built electric vehicle Toyota GB chairman Trevor Taylor said the manufacturer was spending $800 million a year on researching and developing vehicles powered by alternative fuels. Electric, gas and hydrogen vehicles are all part of Toyota's environmental agenda and Taylor told a press lunch that moves to solve the current worldwide vehicle emission debate were vital.
