OFF-ROAD vehicles are holding their own on the used car market - particularly if they are fitted with the right kit, according to residual value experts at CAP. Despite predictions of a sharp drop in demand for off-roaders as MPVs take over as the new vehicles in vogue, the sector is enjoying a mini boom.

According to CAP, image is everything in this fashion-conscious end of the market and a car-load of accessories is the key to achieving respectable residuals on the second hand market. Operations director Andrew Wilkinson said: 'Basic, poorly equipped 4x4s will struggle while cars loaded with kit sell. The attractions have not changed and image is still a powerful priority to the would-be 4x4 owner. Part of the importance of that image is reflected in the vast array of accessories available.

Wilkinson said off-roaders still carried a residual value premium over similarly priced two-wheel drive vehicles and the only clouds on the horizon were concerns over high maintenance and repair costs and the environmental credentials of diesel - which powers the majority of 4x4s.

COMMERCIAL vehicle customers are shying away from high-mileage used stock in favour of readily-available younger vehicles according to CAP Red Book. Head of editorial Tim Wilcock said the traditional high mileage buyer has become all but extinct and shows no sign of returning to the market.
